中國國營傳媒在週四(23/7)發表的評論專欄指稱，美國政府下令關閉中國在候斯頓(Houston)的領事館的行為，是企圖將美國的失敗歸咎於北京，為11月3日的美國大選造勢。
美國政府週三(22/7)稱，給予中國72小時關閉位於候斯頓的領事館，以保護美國的知識產權及美國的私隱資料。(to protect American intellectual property and Americans’ private information.)
美國的行動標誌著這兩個世界最大經濟體之間的衝突再次升溫，美國最近多次指控中國在美國境內進行間諜行為。
中國駐美國大使館形容美國這次的行為的是「政治挑釁」(political provocation)，並呼籲華盛頓需要「立即撤銷」這個決定。外交部發言人華春瑩(Hua Chunying)在Twitter上發佈帖文指，中國將「肯定會以堅定的反制回應」。
中國官方英文報章《中國日報》(China Daily)形容美國的行為是「美國政府意圖在世界舞台上污衊中國為懷有惡意的角色，然後將中國在國際社會上驅逐出去的新棋局。」(a new gambit in the U.S. administration’s bid to paint China as a malevolent actor on the world stage, and thus make it an outlaw to the international community.)
《中國日報》又補充指，「這樣的行動顯示了他(特朗普,Donald Trump)在總統選舉民調中落後於他的對手……這位美國領袖正豁出一切，企圖描繪中國為惡魔的代理人。」(The move shows that lagging behind his presidential election opponent in the polls… the US leader is going all out in his attempts to portray China as an agent of evil.)
《環球時報》(Global Times)，一份由中國共產黨人民日報(Communist Party’s People’s Daily newspaper)營運的英語報章，同樣指控美國總統特朗普正在玩弄政治(playing politics)。
《環球時報》稱，「11月的總統大選正驅使華盛頓發怒。」
在週四早上發佈的聲明上，中國駐華盛頓大使館(the Chinese embassy in Washington)指控美國對中國外交使節的行為是「無理捏造」(groundless fabrications)，敦促美國立即撒銷這個錯誤的行為。
